This is a Word Video Basic macro that can transliterate Cyrillic characters in a Word file into Roman characters -- if you can actually see the Cyrillic characters on you screen, and the Cyrillic functions on your computer are set up more or less like the Cyrillic functions on my computer.
The stuff here is all notes and instructions. The macro itself is a chunk of text that follows these notes, between the pre and the /pre line.
1) Preparing the macro:
a) Make a backup copy of this file.
b) Delete the pre line and everything above it. Also, cut the last line, the one that says /pre. These lines are not part of the macro.
c) Select the entire file by pressing Control and A at the same time, then "copy" it into the computer's memory by pressing Control and C at the same time.
2) Making the macro:
a) Choose the Tools menu. Select the Macro submenu, then the Macros tool.
b) Type in the name "Russ."
c) Click the Create button.
d) Your cursor should be between a line that says "Macro created 02/29/00 by Allison Bell" and a second line that says "End sub."
e) Press Control and V at the same time to paste the transliteration macro into that spot.
f) Press Alt and Q at the same time to close Video Basic and return to Word.
3) Running the macro:
a) Choose the Tools menu, the Macro submenu and the Macros option.
b) Select the macro called "Russ."
c) Click the Run button.
d) Keeping hitting Y (yes) till the macro stops transliterating.
4) Advanced instructions -- Adapting the macro to your computer:
This macro works by finding and replacing Cyrillic letters, such as the Cyrillic "a." On my computer, the Cyrillic "a" is the equivalent of typing Alt-1072, or "ChrW(1072)" in Video Basic macro language.
Your computer may use different Alt codes. If so, you can find and change the codes in your version of this macro yourself with a little bit of annoying work. You have to start Word, choose the Insert menu and the Symbol submenu. In the Symbol submenu, choose Font: Arial, and Subset: Cyrillic.
To find the Alt codes, or ChrW codes, that youre computer is using for Cyrillic, select the Cyrillic letter "a" on the picture of the keyboard. Then, click the Shorcut key. The box labeled "Description" should tell you the Alt code your computer is using for Cyrillic "a." (Say, 6078.) Replace 1072 with 6078, without changing any of the other characters.
Repeat this step for each Cyrillic letter. In other words, you have to go find every single Cyrillic letter on the Insert Symbol keyboard/Font Arial/Subset Cyrillic menu, press the Shortcut key, and get the Alt code from the Description box. Then, you have to make sure to change this macro to reflect the correct Alt Code.
Looking up the Alt codes will be boring, but it should be pretty easy. If none of what I'm saying seems to make sense, it might be that your computer is set up too differently from mine for you to be able to make use of this macro.
